Jamaican Sayings

Saying: Wifey and matey can't be friends

Translation: The wife and the woman you're having an affair with will never be friends.

Explanation: This is the Jamaican way of saying "you can't have your cake and eat it too". It's impossible for the wife you have at home to be comfortable and happy with the woman you've chosen to have an affair with.

Saying: Him did a try gi' Uriah a jacket.

Translation: He was trying to give Uriah an illegitimate child.

Explanation: When we say a child is a "jacket", we mean that the child is given a father that's not genetically his. In other words, you may think the child is yours, but a DNA test would prove otherwise.
