Leviticus 15 the big points
1) The discharge referred to in verses 2-13 appear to be a sickness. Ceremonial uncleanness protected others from contracting whatever the sickness was.
2) Semen and other discharge were not sinful. They only made a person ceremonially unclean.
3) God wanted us to separate worship from sex. Jehovah did not want to be worshiped as the heathen gods were.
Ceremonial uncleanness makes us temp unable to come to God but this is not our permanent state
The whole chapter is about the discharges that come from the body. Leviticus 15 references two types of discharges: healthy and unhealthy. Both types of discharges served to make the individual ceremonially unclean.
In cases where an individual comes in contact with another person’ discharge they are also ceremonially unclean. They had to wash their clothes and bathe.
At first read it appears as though the person with the discharge is being scorned; but think about what pathogens live in discharges …. Bacteria. Once again God is showing his people that he is concerned with cleanliness and he cares about our health.
There’s another thing to note about the laws concerning bodily discharges: the healthy discharge only served to make an individual ceremonially unclean temporarily. In other words, they were not able to participate in social activities – for the health of the congregation. Once they were cleansed of their discharge, they washed their clothes, bathed and were able to participate in all activities – business as usual.
If the discharge was unnatural – meaning that some form of sickness caused it to happen, once it stopped that individual remained ceremonially unclean for seven days and had to bring a burnt offering and a sin offering to be sacrificed before the Lord. But we’re looking for the grace, so here it is:
Being unclean did not permanently bar us from communing with God. He separated us for our safety because an unclean person cannot come into the presence of our holy God and live. The ceremonial uncleanness was to protect us.
As soon as the person was cleansed, God invited them to seek atonement and to consecrate themselves to him. He wanted to continue their relationship. Don’t you find grace in that?
Almighty God, thank you for continuing to make a way for us to come you’re your presence. Thank you for revealing to your people what is required of a holy God. Consecrate us Jehovah so that we can be holy as we come into your presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
