Faith

Faith comes by hearing

Definitions

Merriam-Webster Online defines faith as:

(1)  Belief and trust in and loyalty to God

(2) Belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion

(3) Firm belief in something for which there is no proof

(4) Complete trust

(5) Something that is believed especially with strong conviction; especially a system of religious beliefs such as the Protestant faith

The Bible defines faith as the “substance of things not found, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1)”. In other words, faith is believing that something exists or is true, even when it doesn’t make sense.

Strong's Concordance

According To Strong’s Concordance, the New Testament occurrence of the word is pistis.

pis'-tis; from G3982 meaning persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:—assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.According To Strong’s Concordance, the New Testament occurrence of the word is pistis.

Nurturing our Faith

Faith, like a plant, has to be nurtured and fed. We nurture our faith when we spend time with God.

We nurture our faith when we believe the things that would be impossible except through Christ.

There are many enemies of faith. These include:

Doubt - But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind (James 1:6 NIV)

Sight - For we live by faith, not by sight (II Corinthians 5:7 NIV)

Inactivity - In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead (James 2:17 NIV).
