God is our refuge ...
A refuge is that place where you go when you're in danger, or you're being chased. Or if you're in trouble. A place of refuge is somewhere that you feel safe and where you are sheltered. God is that refuge for us.
So, when you're having a bad day, you can go to God. He never has bad days. If people mistreat you, there's a hiding place in Jehovah. When the enemy tests you and persecutes you, the very best place to be is in the sheltering arms of Jesus.
and strength ...
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). This much-quoted verse is often underestimated. There is a power source to be accessed when we tap into the resources of God through His Son Jesus.
Things that were once impossible become possible. Things that were once unbearable become bearable. Our faith is expanded and God uses us to accomplish a great work; all because we rely on His strength.
... a very present help in trouble.
It's funny how when we're going through our problems and our trials it always seems as though we're alone. But this is God's assurance that despite how we feel He's right there with us. He is always there.
This psalm was written as a song of praise. Do you worship when you're in the midst of a test? Do you give God praise? Or do you sometimes mumble and grumble your way through it?
I believe that the psalmist was making a point that tribulations are the perfect time to send up that sacrifice of praise. We're not giving God honor because of what He can do for us.
Instead we're glorifying Him because He's God. Who are we to complain about our circumstances? Can we change anything of our own strength? If it's raining when we want to go outside, can we make the rain stop? If we put all the alarm clocks in the world beside a corpse, will the din raise him?
We need to start to recognize that life is a gift. Being chastened by God is an honor. We have done nothing to earn life or health or anything in this world. Without the grace of God we can do nothing.
A good way of remembering these things is to praise God at all times. Praise Him in the good times as well as the bad. He is our refuge and our strength at all times.
